Stop Obsessing Over the Rig Count. Here’s What Actually Matters.

Every Monday morning, half my LinkedIn feed is about the Baker Hughes rig count. Up three. Down two. What it means for Q3. I think most of us in oilfield services have it backwards. We treat the weekly rig count like a weather forecast, reacting to every shift. It’s the wrong approach. The real competitive edge isn’t in predicting the market. It’s in preparing for the inevitable errors that happen when the market moves.

The Mistake That Changed My View

In early 2024, I was handling a wireline order out of Broussard, LA. The U.S. rig count had just climbed to about 619 (Baker Hughes, January 12, 2024). Everyone was scrambling. Orders were flooding in. My team was stretched thin.

Some people will argue that in a fast-moving market, speed is the only priority. “If we spend too long checking, we lose the order to Halliburton.” I’ve heard it from managers and sales guys. Honestly, that argument looks reasonable on paper. But it ignores the total cost.

Let’s run the numbers. A rushed order that skips verification might save 4 hours in processing time. Saving a few hours upfront can cost days of recovery.

It’s basically a trade-off between perceived speed and real reliability. The market doesn’t reward the fastest mistake-maker. It rewards the person who delivers the right equipment on the first try.

My Checklist (Born From My Regrets)

After the third rejection in Q1 2024, I created a pre-check list for our team. It’s not a fancy digital tool. It’s a printed sheet that sits next to my monitor. The core items are:

  1. Confirm the BOM matches the client’s latest well plan. (Not the one from two weeks ago. The current one.)
  2. Verify part numbers against the manufacturer’s compatibility matrix. (This is the step I missed in January.)
  3. Check the billing and shipping addresses from the client contract. (Not from memory. From the file.)
  4. Re-read the quantity field out loud. (Sounds silly. Catches typos.)
