It was a Tuesday afternoon in October 2019. I was sitting in a rental car outside a fabrication shop in Victoria, Texas, staring at a Baker Hughes wireline skid we'd just bought for $14,000. I handle field equipment orders for a small completion services company. That means I'm the one who clicks “buy it now” on oilfield equipment listings. Over the last six years, I've made plenty of mistakes and documented every one of them. This one sticks with me because it was the most preventable.
We found the skid through a broker who advertised Baker Hughes equipment for sale at a discount. The listing included photos, a service history, and a phone number that went straight to voicemail. That should have been my first red flag.
The Purchase That Looked Perfect
The skid was a Baker Hughes unit from 2015. The seller said it was complete and ready to work. The price was right—around 40% below what a comparable new unit would have cost. We wired a deposit, arranged trucking, and waited.
When it arrived, it looked fine. Everything was greased, the hydraulic lines were tagged, and the data plate was intact. I was proud of the deal. Then we looked closer.

White vs Knicks: The Bidding Mistake
We needed a shop to fabricate an adapter. We asked for quotes from two local outfits. One was a custom welding shop run by a guy named White. The other was a smaller industrial service company owned by an old mechanic named Knicks.
From the start, it was White vs Knicks for the install work.
White walked around the skid, kicked the tires, and said, “Yeah, we can handle this. No problem. Give us three days.”
